Why are birthdays important?

Do you know that the concept of birthday celebration started in Greece, more than 3000 years ago? Different cultures have different ways of 'celebration', but almost all of them regard it in positive view.
Most of us celebrate birthdays with kith and kin, probably to share the information of our age and hence the expectations surrounding the age.
Certain milestone ages may be more significant like the first year, 15 or 16, 30, 50, 60 and maybe every year after that :-)

Have you ever wondered why a birthday is important or noteworthy, atleast when your birthday is nearing and what is the point in blowing away the candles ?
In my opinion, birthdays make us think, who we are, where I stand in my life and what is it that I want to do with my life. These Qs should be the guiding spirit of one's life, but somehow I remember them only a week or two ahead of the B'days :-)

Well, here is the reason for this topic- it is my "star" bday today! And, 'Happy birthday' to those who celebrate it today.

Tomorrow is the Valentine's day

Even before the dawn of the month, V day was in the headlines of most newspapers in Karnataka! It all started when Mutalik's mercenary attacked the pubgoers in Mangalore. It is a fact that alcohol is not healthy! But, then should the Govt. issue licenses to wine shops and pubs or sell them in Toddy shops? Forget that argument.
The safe guardians of culture should attacked the pub owners or should have beat down all including the guys! Why only the weaker sex? One should be fair even if one is doing injustice!
Is Mutalik saying that only the women are responsible for regarding our cultural inheritance? No wonder, his post box is flooded with 'Pink chaddis' & Victoria Secrets :-) though I personally donot approve of sending such stuff to him (He will make money by selling them, what say u?)
My 2 cents : All this drama is to set the stage for the impending Assembly elections in 3-4 months. If not for all this Thamasha, I wouldn't have come to know of this small-time politician!

Or, he has tie-ups with brands like Archies to promote V-day sales! He is a brand ambassador who promotes by asking people not to do things whom he is sure will do it definitely to prove a point!
What more marketing required than this?
Wish u all a happy Valentine's day!

Back When We Were Grownups

Currently, I'm reading a novel 'Back When We Were Grownups' by Anne Tyler. Last weekend I purchased it. I had mistook Anne Tyler for Ann Taylor who had authored the famous 'My Mother' and the most popular rhyme 'Twinkle twinkle little star'.
I realized something was different as the backdrop was Baltimore, U.S instead of Ann's U.K !
Anyway, this novel is interesting and definitely worth a read. I hope to finish it by today or tomorrow provided I don't doze off early!
I had a fitness competition in my gym in the morning and feeling tired since then! What a way to start the work week :-)
You have a nice week ahead!

Did you cherish the long weekend?

I definitely did though, we did not pack our bags this time, for a change!
Saturday went off in window shopping (does this term include the numerous trails in vain, as well?)on Brigade road and browsed in my favorite book shop on Church street. Earlier I had planned to visit Indiranagar 100 ft road, but changed the venue when I heard from a friend that 100 ft was crowded with media crew and eagerly onlookers after the Honda-runover incident. Come to think of it, it is sad that pedestrians have neither safety nor the comfort of walking, eventhough walking is the best mode of transport wrt the much-voiced ecological aspect! What an irony :-(
Back to my list of things done - Went on long walks in the evening to CMH road and burnt lot of calories :-(
The next day, 4 of us headed towards Igglur dam - Shall try to post more info on this place, which is 95 Kms from Blr - and Omkar hills on the return journey. It was a long and tiring day with sun back to its scorching mode, already in Jan!
Monday was relaxing - a friend stayed back with us and we played games, watched Republic day parade in between and ate lots of junk.
In the evening, saw the movie Raaz2. That was the first horror movie I had ever seen. I was glad that I didn't get scared very much. In few scenes, I closed my eyes as I felt yucky to see the gory ones.
Enjoy the week ahead!

Recent movies

Caution: Avoid theaters showing Chandni Chowk to China & Tamil movie, Villu, for retaining ur sanity!
My weekend went off in seeing these movies. Plzzz do not repeat my mistakes.

Well, for the sake of mentioning, the first 1 hr of Villu is mindless comedy and the rest of the movie is only mindless!
Nothing more to write abt these movies.

Black day for 'Satyam'

You would also feel the same if you are associated with Satyam in anyway.
I am - having picked up Satyam stocks when they were trading >400. Also, I have friends who are ex-Satyam employees.
The current value of the scrip is 37 :-( Today, it had lost 140 INR. My second experience in having a stock that nose-dived on a single day(First one was RCOM).

Rediff(other media also) has published the letter written by Chairman Raju to SEBI where he had stated that the balance sheet was his creative place to write down numbers he wanted to.
If this is the case with one (or ex) of the IT top-5, what abt the chottu-mottu companies ?
Why do we have Auditors who are paid astronomical fees, if they are neither independent nor reliable?

Well, as an individual, I have only 2 Questions in mind:
Should I buy at these low prices hoping a buy-back or take-over or exchange ?
Or keep quiet and expect it to settle in the long term on its own ?

What's ur suggestion?

2009 - The New year

Wish everyone of you a very happy, fun-filled, successful, healthy and prosperous NEW YEAR!
Let the new year see the beginnings of things you had always hoped for and the end of those habits you want to get rid of!
How did you ring in the new year? We had been to a friend's apartment association celebration and had fun with friends. It was a bit funny as well, as the entertainment turned into playing 'Housie' after dinner on the NY eve and people like were desperately looking for the lady to announce stop of the play instead of the numbers. Finally when it ended at 11.50 pm, we had lost lot of our nails :-) Then came the DJ who preferred melodies and I agree with him, but a Ghajini number on the dance floor?
The good numbers were put off in the first stanza and I was furious when my favorite 'Bhool Bhulaiya' met that end :-(
Overall, it was fun and the beginning act was lots of laugh. Hope the laughter continues into the year as well.
